🌍 Beyond the Destination: Why I Travel

People often ask me why I travel.

Some assume it is because I enjoy visiting new places.

Others think it is about collecting experiences, taking photographs, or ticking destinations off a list.

While those things are certainly part of it, the truth is much deeper.

Travel has become one of the most meaningful parts of my life.

Not because of the destinations alone, but because of the lessons, experiences, and memories that come with every journey.

It Was Never Part of the Plan

    I was born into a middle-class family.

Growing up, travelling overseas was never a priority.

Like many families, the focus was on providing for the family, managing expenses, and ensuring everyone had what they needed.

Travel was something we talked about, not something we regularly did.

At that stage of life, visiting another country felt more like a luxury than a possibility.

    Looking back, I understand why.

    Life was about responsibilities first.

    Travel could wait.

    Breaking the Chain

But somewhere along the way, that changed.

One person who played a big part in changing that mindset was my mother.

As the years went by, she started travelling more, especially for spiritual and temple visits.

What began as a personal journey slowly became something bigger.

    My siblings started travelling.

    And eventually, I did too.

Looking back now, I realise that a chain was broken.

The idea that travel was something distant or out of reach slowly disappeared.

Instead, travel became something we embraced.

    Something we enjoyed.

    Something that helped us grow.

    More Than Just a Destination

Over the years, I have travelled for different reasons.

    Some journeys were spiritual.

    Some were for leisure.

Some were simply opportunities to explore somewhere new.

But regardless of the destination, I realised that the greatest value of travel is not found in the places themselves.

It is found in the experiences.

    The stories.

    The people.

And the memories we bring home.

    A destination may attract us.

But it is the experience that stays with us.

    Experiencing Different Cultures

One of my favourite things about travelling is experiencing different cultures.

I enjoy seeing how people live, what they value, and how traditions are preserved from one generation to another.

Every place has its own identity.

    Its own rhythm.

    Its own story.

And there is always something new to learn.

Travel reminds me that even though we come from different backgrounds, there is often far more that connects us than separates us.

The Food, The Beaches, and The People

I would be lying if I said food was not part of the experience.

One of the highlights of travelling is trying different foods and local specialties.

Sometimes it is the famous dishes.

Sometimes it is a small family-owned restaurant that is not listed in any guidebook.

The same goes for beaches, nature, and local attractions.

    Every destination offers something unique.

But if there is one thing I remember most from my travels, it is the people.

    The conversations.

    The friendships.

The strangers who become part of a memory.

The people who help make a journey meaningful.

Those moments stay with me long after the trip ends.

    Travel Changed Me

When I first started travelling, I was focused on the destination.

Today, I travel for the experience.

    Travel has taught me patience.

    It has taught me gratitude.

It has taught me to appreciate different perspectives.

It has helped me understand that life is much bigger than the small corner of the world we see every day.

Most importantly, it has helped me create memories that I will carry with me forever.

Travel has also taught me that some of life’s greatest memories are not expensive.

They can be found in a conversation with a stranger.

    A temple visit.

    A sunrise.

    A family photograph.

Or simply a moment that reminds us to be grateful.

    Beyond The Horizon

One unexpected outcome of travelling was the creation of this blog.

Beyond The Horizon started as a place to document journeys and memories.

Over time, it became something more.

    A place to preserve experiences.

    A place to share stories.

A place to reflect on lessons learned along the way.

Looking back, travel did not just give me memories.

It gave me Beyond The Horizon.

And through this blog, I have been able to relive moments that might otherwise have faded with time.

    Looking Back

The older I get, the more I realise that travel is not about how many countries I have visited or how many photos I have taken.

    It is about the experiences.

    The people.

    The lessons.

    The memories.

And the gratitude that comes from being able to see more of the world.

Travel started as something I never expected to be part of my life.

Today, I cannot imagine my life without it.

Because beyond every destination is a story waiting to be discovered.

And that is why I travel.🌍✈️❀️

Travel is not about escaping life.

It is about experiencing enough of it to return home with a different perspective. 🌍✨

πŸ“Έ More Than Just Photos: Five Memories I Hold Close to My Heart

They say a picture is worth a thousand words.

Looking through my photo collection recently, I realised that some photos are worth much more than that.

    They remind us of people.

    They remind us of dreams.

They remind us of moments that changed us.

    Some photos make us smile.

    Some make us emotional.

And some remind us of how far we have come.

These are five photos that I treasure the most and the stories behind them.

A Photograph of My Father and Grandmother

Out of all the photos I own, this is one that I find difficult to look at without feeling emotional.

It was taken during my grandmother’s birthday celebration.

In the photo are my father and grandmother.

Today, both of them are no longer here.

More than twenty years have passed, but every time I look at this picture, the memories return.

It reminds me of family, love, and moments that we often don’t realise will become priceless one day.

If I could save only one photograph, this might be the one.

    Graduation Day πŸŽ“

Completing my MBA was one of the proudest moments of my life.

    Not because of the certificate.

    Not because of the title.

But because it was something my parents always wanted to see.

My father was no longer there to witness it.

But I know he would have been proud.

Seeing my mother there made the moment even more meaningful.

It felt like I had fulfilled a dream that belonged not only to me, but to my parents as well.

My First Half Marathon – 21.1km

If someone had told me years ago that I would complete a 21km run, I probably would have laughed.

Yet there I was at the finish line.

    Tired.Sore.Happy.

Completing my first half marathon taught me something important.

We are often capable of much more than we think.

Sometimes we simply need to believe in ourselves and take the first step.

    My Family πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘¦

Every collection of treasured photos needs one family picture.

    This is mine.

Through every achievement, challenge, journey, and chapter of life, family has always been there.

    They are my support system.

They are the people I celebrate with.

They are the people I return home to.

Looking at this photo reminds me of how fortunate I am.

At the end of the day, family is one of life’s greatest blessings.

    The Drawing of Murugan

    This is not a photograph.

    It is a drawing.

A drawing gifted by someone I will simply call Medusa.

Medusa enjoys drawing, and one day she shared this artwork with me.

What made it special was something she once told me.

She started drawing it with me in mind, but somehow the finished drawing resembled Lord Murugan.

Looking at it today, I still find that fascinating.

As someone whose life has been deeply connected to Murugan, this drawing became more than artwork.

    It became a meaningful memory.

It remains one of my favourite pieces and one that I will always treasure.

Looking at these five photos, I realise they tell the story of my life better than words ever could.

    Inspiration.Family.Loss.Achievement.

    Perseverance.Love.

    Each photo captures a moment.

But together, they capture a journey.

    And that journey continues.

    πŸ“Έ To Be Continued…

As I was writing this post, I realised something.

Limiting myself to just five photos was much harder than I expected.

There are many more photographs that hold special memories, life lessons, and stories that deserve to be shared.

So this is not the end.

It is simply the first chapter.

Stay tuned for Part 2, where I’ll share five more photos and the stories behind them. πŸ“Έβœ¨
