Where the Road Ends: My Journey to Dhanushkodi

Dhanushkodi was one of those places for me.

Ever since I learned about the abandoned town at the southeastern tip of India, I knew it was a place I wanted to see for myself. The stories of its past, the vast stretches of coastline, and the unique location where land meets the endless sea sparked my curiosity.

What I didn’t expect was how much the journey itself would become part of the experience.

The road stretched ahead like a narrow ribbon, surrounded by the sea and open sky. With every passing kilometer, the crowds became fewer, the surroundings quieter, and the sense of adventure stronger.

For a moment, it felt like I was travelling towards the edge of the world. It was one of those rare travel moments when you stop thinking about your destination and simply enjoy the journey itself.

And yet, the best was still waiting ahead.

    The Road to Dhanushkodi

The journey to Dhanushkodi was just as memorable as the destination itself.

As we drove beyond Rameswaram, the landscape slowly changed. The sea appeared on both sides of the road, stretching endlessly towards the horizon. The further I travelled, the quieter it became.

With the wind rushing past and nothing but blue skies and open water around me, the drive felt like an adventure in itself. It was one of those rare journeys where I found myself slowing down just to take in the view.

Life at the Edge of the Sea

Despite being known as a ghost town, Dhanushkodi is far from deserted.

Visitors wander along the shoreline, fishermen head out to sea, and local vendors serve refreshments to travellers exploring the area. The contrast between the town’s tragic history and the life that continues today is what makes Dhanushkodi so unique.

Standing by the shore, watching fishing boats in the distance and listening to the sound of the waves, I felt a deep appreciation for the resilience of the people who still call this place home.

    A Moment to Pause

One of my favourite memories from this trip wasn’t visiting a landmark or taking photographs.

It was simply sitting on the rocks, looking out at the endless sea.

For a few moments, everything felt still. There was no rush to move on to the next destination. Just the sound of the waves, the sea breeze, and the horizon stretching as far as I could see.

Travel often gives us beautiful views, but sometimes it also gives us the chance to pause and appreciate the present moment. Dhanushkodi did exactly that for me.

    Beyond The Horizon

As I left Dhanushkodi, I couldn’t help but look back one last time.

What I found here was more than just a destination. It was a place filled with stories, history, and natural beauty. From the road lined by the sea to the historic ruins and the peaceful coastline, Dhanushkodi offered an experience I won’t soon forget.

Some places stay with you because of what you see.

Dhanushkodi stays with you because of how it makes you feel.

  • Standing Before a Millennium: My Visit to Thanjavur’s Brihadeeswarar Temple

Standing Before a Millennium: My Visit to Thanjavur’s Brihadeeswarar Temple

The first sight of Brihadeeswarar Temple is difficult to forget.

As I walked through the temple complex in Thanjavur, my eyes were immediately drawn upward to the towering vimana rising above everything around it. Despite seeing countless photographs over the years, nothing prepared me for the scale and presence of this Chola masterpiece.

More than a thousand years after its construction, the temple continues to inspire visitors with its beauty, engineering brilliance, and spiritual significance.

The Vision of Raja Raja Chola I

Brihadeeswarar Temple, also known as Peruvudaiyar Kovil or the Big Temple, was commissioned by Emperor Raja Raja Chola I during the 11th century.

Standing within the complex, it is remarkable to imagine how such an ambitious structure was built centuries before modern machinery existed

    Walking Through History

One of the things that impressed me most was the level of detail throughout the temple.

From intricate carvings to massive stone structures, every corner seemed to tell a story. The temple does not simply showcase architecture; it preserves history, culture, devotion, and craftsmanship in a way that few monuments can.

As sunlight illuminated the ancient stones, it became easy to understand why this temple remains one of Tamil Nadu’s most treasured landmarks.

    The Magnificent Nandi

Another highlight of the visit was the enormous Nandi statue.

Positioned directly in front of the sanctum, the majestic stone bull commands attention with its size and craftsmanship. Visitors naturally pause here, admiring the remarkable detail carved into a single block of stone.

A Legacy That Endures / Conclusion

As I prepared to leave, I took one final look at the towering.

Empires have risen and fallen. Generations have come and gone. Yet Brihadeeswarar Temple continues to stand proudly, reminding visitors of the extraordinary achievements of the Chola civilization.

What made this visit even more special for me was finally having the opportunity to capture a photograph of the sacred Shiva Lingam within the temple. While the temple’s majestic architecture leaves visitors in awe, standing before the sanctum and witnessing the spiritual heart of this ancient monument was an experience that photographs can only partially convey.

My visit was not simply about seeing a famous landmark. It was about connecting with a piece of history, faith, and culture that continues to inspire awe more than a thousand years after it was built.

As I walked away from the temple grounds, I carried with me not only photographs of an architectural masterpiece but also the memory of a moment I had long hoped to capture, one that made the journey even more meaningful.

  • Lessons Learned from Hiking in Nature

Lessons Learned from Hiking in Nature

Some of my favorite travel memories haven’t come from famous landmarks or busy cities. They’ve come from hiking trails.

There’s something different about being out in nature with nothing but a trail ahead of you. No deadlines, no distractions, just the sound of your footsteps, the wind through the trees, and the occasional reward of a view that makes every step worth it.

One thing hiking has taught me is patience.

Not every trail is easy. Some climbs feel longer than expected, and there are moments when you wonder if the destination is really worth the effort. But I’ve found that the best viewpoints are rarely the easiest to reach. The journey itself becomes part of the reward.

Hiking has also taught me to slow down.

When we’re constantly rushing through daily life, it’s easy to miss the small things. On a trail, I find myself noticing details I would normally overlook, sunlight breaking through the trees, the sound of a stream nearby, or the changing scenery around me.

Another lesson is that progress doesn’t have to be fast.

There have been hikes where I needed to stop and catch my breath more times than I wanted to admit. But every time I kept going, one step at a time, I eventually reached my destination. It’s a reminder that moving forward, no matter how slowly, is still progress.

Most importantly, hiking helps me reconnect with myself.

Looking back, I realize that hiking is rarely just about reaching the destination. It’s about the moments along the way, the challenges overcome, and the quiet reminders that progress often comes one step at a time.

Every trail has a story, and I’m grateful for every one I’ve had the chance to walk.

The mountains may not speak, but they always seem to have something to teach.

Every hike begins with a single step and a trail waiting to be explored

Reaching the destination is rewarding, but the journey is what I remember most.

  • Where Fire Meets Faith: Arunachaleswarar Temple

Where Fire Meets Faith: Arunachaleswarar Temple

    Thiruvannamalai

Some destinations leave an impression long after the journey ends. Arunachaleswarar Temple in Thiruvannamalai is one of those places.

Located at the foothills of the sacred Arunachala Hill in Tamil Nadu, India, the temple stands as a symbol of faith, history, and devotion. From the moment I caught sight of its towering gopurams, I was struck by their grandeur and the centuries of stories they silently carry.

Every corner seemed to hold its own history and significance. Beyond its architectural beauty, the temple offers a sense of peace that is difficult to describe. The sound of temple bells, the prayers of devotees, and the spiritual atmosphere create an experience that goes far beyond sightseeing.

What makes Arunachaleswarar Temple especially unique is its connection to Arunachala Hill, which is revered as a manifestation of Lord Shiva in the form of fire. For centuries, pilgrims have journeyed here seeking blessings, spiritual reflection, and inner peace.

As I explored the temple grounds, I found myself slowing down and appreciating not only the beauty of the structure but also the devotion and traditions that continue to thrive there today.

Some places are destinations. Others are journeys in themselves. Thiruvannamalai is one of them.
